Yee! Who even knew that there were electronic musicians in Memphis? Besides The Sky Patrol, I was pretty afraid it was all DJs here, and no one even cared about the people who actually make the music that the DJs are playing. Which makes no sense unless you have been fooled into thinking that the DJs are making the music while on stage. Too bad I've met people who think that. They sure are smart! Still, having a party of all original goodness is one of my many favorite sorts of parties what can be had Nice wide range of genres, too~

So, Monsieur Bob, can you give us more details on the musical styles and equipment utilized? Speaking in riddles is fun but I like to get to the steak of the matter, too. In any case, I expect this to be utterly fascinating.

Re: |JUNE 7 | 9PM | Controllerism @ Full Moon Club
jim you should probably focus less on how they bring their music to you and more on the quality and substance of what they bring.
i don't give a ratshit if you get up on stage with a xylophone and a chainsaw as long as it's well thought out and arranged.

Eh? I said I'm glad someone is throwing a party with people playing their own music, cuz I didn't think there was anyone here that made their own music. What is you talkin' about? I'm not concerned with how people bring the music. Hell, I DJed with a laptop and MIDI controller for a while. Maybe the 'my favorite' part threw you off a bit. I will fix it up for you
Also now i am really hoping for someone to come out with a xylophone and chainsaw. Look what you've done to me

Re: |JUNE 7 | 9PM | Controllerism @ Full Moon Club
i think it's great that people are playing their own stuff when they play out but sometimes it's easy to get caught up in that fact regardless of whether they're actually worth a shit or not. that's all i'm saying. just because they're playing their own stuff doesn't mean they're better than or worse than someone who does it differently. it's the music that sets the standard for me.
but yes it is cool that there are more and more people doing it live.

Ah, yee! Definitely. That would be a sad day to go to a dance party and then hear a big old pile of mud haha. I'm sure UR wouldn't bring anything crappy though. You can't really expect to hear professional mastering jobs here, but other than that I bet it'll be crunk.

I believe if an artist plays his own made music AND mixes it himself then that would make it more worth a shit because it took double the work then it would if you were just mixing a song. Sure, the music might sound like a turd flying out of a birds ass but it did take more work and creativity to be able to pull both of those strings. But yeah, what really matters is what you come up with in the end after tweeking or creating the song. We should get into the creativity aspect much more too...would you say cover songs are better than the original song? And who is to say that its better? Wouldnt better mean the amount of work and time you put into the music or the ability to make something completey brand new? I'm really curious to see what you have to say! This is a good ol conversation starter. ^_^ Plus it never hurts to get others angles on the subject, might be able to learn from each other.

Re: |JUNE 7 | 9PM | Controllerism @ Full Moon Club
just to set it straight i was definitely not attempting to imply that the promoters of this event were bringing out crappy music, quite the contrary. i'm all for people playing live as well as for people who dj and even those that do both. for some reason it just felt to me that you were saying that those who play live deserve more respect based solely on the fact that they're playing all of their own stuff, all the while leaving out the quality of the music as a factor.
a dj who takes me on a sonic journey that appeals to my heart gets more respect from me than someone who plays live music that doesn't really appeal to me. it all comes back to the quality of the music and how it relates to my tastes. the only thing i care about is the quality of the end product. if someone happened to produce and play their own music live and then it appeals to me i'll show them even more love but i'm not going to give it to them automatically. they definitely deserve kudos for the effort and energy they put in to realize an idea and then visualize it as a song/journey and i'm not trying to take that away from them, but the extra credit love doesn't just come gratis.
for the OP i didn't mean to derail your thread, i just wanted to explain myself a little better.

Re: |JUNE 7 | 9PM | Controllerism @ Full Moon Club
blah blah blah.
Congrats on doing something different. Different is always good.
Let's be real though. It is HARD, LIKE FUCKING HARD HARD HARD to make electronic equipment put out "good" sounding music. What's that old rule that something only 1 track out of 10 produced by an artist is actually "good?"
It seems pretty damn hard for a 1 man band to make something "good." Don't the professionals usually have a whole team behind them to EQ and yada yada to make everything sound superb?
Personally I like DJ sets in which the DJ incorporates a track here or there of their own.
Shit, even some of the recorded live performances/songs from the Chemical Brothers, who have been doing live performances since like 1994, sound like utter crap and they be having experience n shit.
blah blah blah
I will plug 10 rolls coated with a concoction of meth and vitamin C to make it hit harder. Yall could get one of those old school keyborads like in Hustle n Flow and i be busting a move mang!

Super excited! Especially after talking to you at VINI. This is what it's all about—experimentation, innovation, community. Love it. Let me know if I can help in any way.

sorry to burst your bubble but there are many producers in memphis, like me, and thinkhead, graflin, mary jane and a few others.
ive been playin for about 8 years off and on but always hardcore computer live pa or mixing and live and we are not so foolish to think that djs create the music, unless they have 4 turntables keyboards, samplers, etc then they are creating new music from a mesh of other music(jeffmills) i mean its possible to make music from a turntable, IE turntablism... well good luck at your event!!! maybe we will meet and we can exchange cds
cheers

The Ultimate Band set is going to feature a ton of creations from all of us, including some new tunes made specifically for the event. Lots of Memphis producers you've never heard of in this set. Get ready for a lesson in home-made computer music.
